Florida Keys Fishing & Tournaments

Welcome to the Sportfishing Capital of the World

Just offshore, four bodies of water – the Gulfstream, the Atlantic, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico - converge to create a “sweet spot” for marine wildlife. In one direction anglers can find North America’s only living coral barrier reef; in the other direction the mangrove clusters and calm bay waters play host to an entirely different spectrum of fish. Over 500 species of fish flourish here, making Islamorada the perfect destination for world-class sportfishing and watersports adventures. Guests can charter boats with seasoned captains at the helm able to guide them to the best fishing spots. Nearby marinas such as Bud ‘n’ Mary’s and World Wide Sportsman allow boat dockage and storage for easy access to your own vessel. If you’d rather stay close to land, cast a line off the end of our 525-foot fishing pier, the longest in the Keys.

Aptly named the Sportfishing Capital of the World, Islamorada is home to numerous fishing tournaments throughout the year. One of the most prestigious is Cheeca Lodge’s own Presidential Sailfish Tournament held each January. Started by former president George H.W. Bush in 1990, this tournament has become an annual favorite of serious anglers worldwide and is a part of the Gold Cup Series of sailfish tournaments. Other tournaments in the area include The Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament, the Mercury Redbone Celebrity Tournament, the Bonefishing World Championship, the Florida Keys Outfitter’s IGFA Inshore World Championship, the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament and the Islamorada Swordfish Tournament.
